1:00 PM - 2:00 PM    Senior Summer Art Classes - Week 1-June 22: Plein Air Painting
New this summer we are offering free art classes for resident adults 55 and over.  We have 7 sessions to offer using various techniques of drawing, painting, and collage as listed below. All materials will be provided you just need to show up and let your creativity to run wild.  Cost:  FreeDates: June 22nd - August 10thDay: TuesdaysTime: 1:00-2:00 pmLocation: Lake House at Veterans' Memorial Park (32756 Lake Rd.)Instructor:  Christine SeeholzerQuestions: 440-930-4135June 22nd: Plein Air Painting Students will learn how to build layers on the canvas with acrylic paint and mediums from an underpainting to the foreground using a palette knife, brush and water. Subject: (Veteran’s Memorial) landscape. Techniques: wash, sgraffito, palette knife painting, impasto. June 29th: Gestural drawing This class focuses on the different ways to “see” and draw an object. The mass, the contour, negative and positive space and proportion. Students will use washable markers and water to create loose expressive drawings that can later be refined and layered.Subjects: Various- house. Anchor, airplane, flag, cannon.  July 6th: Mixed Media Cross-stitch This class will explore the playful capture of cloud formations with the different sensory and tactile experience of combining yarn and paint, combining embroidery techniques and acrylic paint on deco mesh Subject: cloud formations. July 20th: Reflection boat Print Part I Today’s portion of this two-class project involves learning techniques in manipulating watercolor to create various effects. Our subject is the lake at sunset. While this is drying...Color field painting Coaster Students will also learn how to express an emotion or subject through color field and learn how to manipulate alcohol-based markers to create painterly effects and make their own coaster. July 27th: Reflection Print Part II Using a drawing guide and a break-down of basic shapes, students will draw a sailboat, then transfer to a foam printing plate. Finally, students will print their sailboat and the reflection onto their previously created lake at sunset paintings. Students will also complete their coasters by applying a protective layer to the bottom and take them home.  August 3rd: Sculptural collage Part I For this mixed media project, students will learn how to build a sculptural relief support onto which you can paint with watercolor. Clay Hand-building techniques Part I Students will follow step-by-step directions to create a 3-d portrait in clay,using additive and subtractive clay-building methods.. Subject: egret, sandpiper, crane, etc. August 10th: Sculptural Collage Part II Using the support created in the previous class, students will add watercolor to complete the painting. Clay building techniques  Part II Students will use acrylic paint and glaze to  create a bronze appearance to their portrait.

Yoga in the Park is back! We, along with our studio partners, are excited to host another summer of downward dogs. Be sure to view the schedule below to see the class styles and descriptions. They range from traditional all-levels flow to stretching-focused and meditative. Classes will be held at Veterans' Memorial Park (32756 Lake Road).Fridays 7am: Sunrise Yoga with Cultivate Yoga SpaceSaturdays 9am: All Levels Flow Yoga with Avon Lake YogaSundays 9:30am: Breathwalk with Studio 83Sundays 5:00pm: Yin Yoga + Tibetan Singing Bowls with Studio 83All classes run ~1 hour.Cost: This is a FREE class, however, donations for the instructor are appreciated.Where: Veterans' Memorial Park, 32756 Lake Road.Parking: Parking is available at Veterans' Memorial Park in front of the Lakehouse and the Folger Home. Blended Learning Red Cross Lifeguarding with Waterfront and Waterpark  Program Dates and Times: Session: June 25th (11:00am-1:00pm) and June 28th-July 1st (10:00am-4:00pm) Program Location:  Ellen Trivanovich Aquatic Center, 32800 Electric Blvd. Program Instructor: Connor McNeill Cost:  $225 resident/$235 non-resident $100 discount/reimbursement will be given to those that work for the City of Avon Lake upon successful completion of the course Registration Deadline: June 24, 2021 Course Purpose: The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies, injuries, and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over. Course Pre-Test:*Must be 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session of this module.*Swim 550 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles are allowed.*Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.*Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.        -Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound  object.        -Return to the surface and swim 20 yards to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath. Candidates should not swim the distance under water.        -Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.*Swim 5 yards, submerge and retrieve three dive rings placed 5 yards apart in 4 to 7 feet of water, resurface and continue to swim another 5 yards to complete the skill sequence. Course Completion & Certification: On successful completion of the Lifeguarding course, participants receive American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED. To successfully complete the Lifeguarding course, the participant must:*Attend and participate in ALL class sessions.*Complete All online lessons and submit completion report (Blended Learning Only)*Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities.*Demonstrate competency in all required final rescue skill scenarios.*Pass the CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid exam, the Lifeguarding skills exam, the Waterpark Lifeguarding exam, and the Waterfront Lifeguarding exam with a minimum of 80 percent.

Blended Learning Red Cross Lifeguarding with Waterfront and Waterpark  Program Dates and Times: Session: June 25th (11:00am-1:00pm) and June 28th-July 1st (10:00am-4:00pm) Program Location:  Ellen Trivanovich Aquatic Center, 32800 Electric Blvd. Program Instructor: Connor McNeill Cost:  $225 resident/$235 non-resident $100 discount/reimbursement will be given to those that work for the City of Avon Lake upon successful completion of the course Registration Deadline: June 24, 2021 Course Purpose: The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies, injuries, and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over. Course Pre-Test:*Must be 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session of this module.*Swim 550 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles are allowed.*Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.*Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Our subject is the lake at sunset. While this is drying...Color field painting Coaster Students will also learn how to express an emotion or subject through color field and learn how to manipulate alcohol-based markers to create painterly effects and make their own coaster. July 27th: Reflection Print Part II Using a drawing guide and a break-down of basic shapes, students will draw a sailboat, then transfer to a foam printing plate. Finally, students will print their sailboat and the reflection onto their previously created lake at sunset paintings. Students will also complete their coasters by applying a protective layer to the bottom and take them home.   August 3rd: Sculptural collage Part I For this mixed media project, students will learn how to build a sculptural relief support onto which you can paint with watercolor. Clay Hand-building techniques Part I Students will follow step-by-step directions to create a 3-d portrait in clay,using additive and subtractive clay-building methods.. Subject: egret, sandpiper, crane, etc.  August 10th: Sculptural Collage Part II Using the support created in the previous class, students will add watercolor to complete the painting. Clay building techniques  Part II Students will use acrylic paint and glaze to  create a bronze appearance to their portrait.
