Air Quality Policy

Air Quality Policy

The safety and well-being of participants, staff, and spectators are the City's top priorities. This policy outlines procedures for recreational activities based on local air quality conditions, guided by the Air Quality Index (AQI) from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The City may cancel or suspend programming when air quality levels become unhealthy. If AQI levels reach or exceed 150 (Unhealthy) on AirNow.gov, all outdoor activities may be immediately suspended, modified, and/or canceled.

Air Quality Index (AQI) Guidelines:

AQI: 0-50 (Good)
  • All activities proceed as scheduled.
  • No restrictions are necessary.

AQI: 51-100 (Moderate)
  • All activities proceed as scheduled.
  • Individuals with pre-existing health conditions (e.g., asthma or respiratory issues) should monitor their symptoms and take necessary precautions.

AQI: 101-150 (Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups)
  • Outdoor activities may proceed with modifications:
    • Consider shortening durations of outdoor activities.
    • Increase water breaks and provide access to shaded or indoor rest areas where feasible.
  • Participants with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions should limit outdoor exposure.

AQI: 151-200+ (Unhealthy)
  • Outdoor activities are strongly discouraged.
  • Move activities indoors where feasible.
  • If moving indoors is not feasible, suspend or reschedule activities.

Monitoring Air Quality
  • Air quality will be assessed hourly using real-time data from reliable sources such as AirNow.gov.

Parental Discretion
Parents always have the final say regarding their child’s participation in activities during poor air quality conditions. If you feel conditions are unsafe, you may withhold your child from activities without any consequences. Please notify your group leader; i.e. activity coordinator, recreation staff, or coach if you choose to withhold participation.

Additional Considerations:
  • Participants with known respiratory or cardiovascular conditions are encouraged to inform their activity coordinators or coaches to ensure appropriate precautions are taken.
